Swiss federal polytechnics (such as ETH Zurich and EPFL) and cantonal public universities are heavily subsidized by the Swiss federal and cantonal governments. As a consequence, tuition fees for both Swiss and international students are remarkably affordable, typically ranging from CHF 1,200 to CHF 1,600 per year—offering world Top-10 academic caliber at a fraction of Anglo-American university costs.

While tuition is low, Switzerland has a high cost of living. To obtain a Swiss student visa, you must provide documented proof of financial solvency of at least CHF 21,000 per academic year. Average monthly living costs range from CHF 1,800 to CHF 2,500 in cities like Zurich, Geneva, and Lausanne covering shared accommodation, mandatory Swiss health insurance, and groceries.

Non-EU/EFTA students are permitted to work up to 15 hours per week during academic semesters, and full-time during scheduled semester breaks, but only after having completed at least 6 months of study in Switzerland. The employer must apply for a cantonal work permit on your behalf.

Upon successfully completing an undergraduate, master's, or doctoral degree in Switzerland, international graduates can apply for a 6-month non-renewable residence permit to look for permanent employment in Switzerland. If you secure a high-skill contract of significant economic or scientific value, the employer can sponsor your regular work permit.

Undergraduate bachelor's programs are primarily conducted in the official regional language of the respective canton (German in Zurich, French in Lausanne and Geneva, Italian in Lugano). However, at the Master's and PhD levels, the vast majority of engineering, computer science, business, and natural science programs at ETH Zurich, EPFL, and research universities are taught 100% in English.
