Everything you need to know about student visas, tuition, living costs, work rights, and admissions in Canada.
A Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is a Canadian post-secondary institution approved by provincial and territorial authorities to host international students. You must hold an official Letter of Acceptance from a recognized DLI to apply for a Canadian Study Permit. Furthermore, only eligible degree programs at qualifying DLIs make you eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
Under Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) guidelines, most undergraduate degree and college diploma applicants must include a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) issued by the university's province alongside their study permit application. Master's and doctoral degree applicants may benefit from prioritized federal allocations and specific exemptions.
Graduates of programs lasting at least 2 years—as well as all graduates of eligible Canadian Master's degree programs regardless of course duration—are eligible for an open 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The PGWP is an open work permit allowing you to work for any employer anywhere across Canada.
International students holding a valid Canadian study permit with on/off-campus work authorization can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during regular academic semesters, and unrestricted full-time hours during scheduled academic breaks such as the winter holidays and summer break.
Yes! Canadian educational credentials and Canadian skilled work experience gained through the PGWP provide substantial extra points under the federal Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), specifically through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Many provinces also offer dedicated International Graduate streams under their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP).
Co-operative education (Co-op) integrates alternating academic terms with paid, full-time professional corporate work terms directly relevant to your field of study. Leading Canadian institutions (such as the University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, and UBC) maintain strong partnerships with global tech and financial firms, enabling graduates to complete their degrees with up to two years of paid industry experience.
